For owners of small craft in Queensland, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) has recently made a change allowing an exemption for Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) to be used in place of an EPIRB for lightweight craft, with certain conditions.

Lightweight craft include human powered kayaks and canoes, small sailing boats less than 6metres in length and personal watercraft such as those manufactured by SeaDoo and Yamaha.

The exemption allows these vessels owners to carry a PLB instead of a traditional EPIRB which in small vessels can be a nightmare to store.

Any PLB used by owners must comply with the AS/NZ 4280.2 standard, have current and up to date registration, worn on the person, float and be GPS enabled.
